Come and have fun with disco and live music by Gabriel Makamanzi (www.sekurulavender.co.uk). We hope that the American citizens living in Derry and other areas can come and share their opinions on this historical moment. It is their victory. Entry is £5. Start 8PM till Late. Date Saturday 08/11/08 ACAF A warm welcome to all the new students from Africa and the Caribbean who have come to study here in Northern Ireland. There are also new people from other parts of the world, who have arrived in County Derry/Londonderry and the adjoining areas to make this their new home. Zimbabwe ‘In January 2008, a loaf of bread cost Zimbabwean $1million, now it is $10million’ At one time one of Africa’s most powerful economies, Zimbabwe is today a not-so shining example of the rich continent. The economy of Zimbabwe has become a butt of all odd jokes. Today, inflation has consumed the life of the small trader in the land of the Great Sculptors. At 231,000,000% official figures from the Zimbabwean Central Bank give an indication that the decline in the real value of money in that country will continue making the ordinary folk suffer even more. Rents, wages, consumer durables like tea, bread, transport, and all kinds of day to day affairs that involve money will gradually be a thing of the past, in the Zimbabwean economy. This complex situation has literally forced unskilled and highly skilled Zimbabweans to look abroad for alternative means in the labour markets. Political parties in Northern Ireland have spoken in the Stormont Assembly on a number of motions on Zimbabwe. On June 23rd 2008, a Private Members’ Business debated a call for Free and Fair Elections in Zimbabwe. Different shades of opinion were delivered on the floor of the Stormont Assembly by the Alliance Party, DUP, Sinn Féin, UUP, Socialist Democratic Labour Party and the general consensus was that a foolproof democratic election is what the Zimbabwean people deserved. Political goodwill is still wrecking the pace for change since the fiasco elections that took place. When politics is not working, the economy will not work and the people reap what they do not sow or deserve. The people of Zimbabwe living in Northern Ireland are continuously demanding real change in their motherland. Nearly 3.4 million Zimbabweans, a quarter of the population are living abroad mainly because of the decade-long political crisis that has engulfed the country. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- up >>
